The struggle upon which we are engaged is full of hardships, full of dangers, for it is the struggle of man against himself.
– Saint Patrick of Ireland
Saint Patrick is not thinking of the problems we face in our outward circumstances, he’s warning us about the battle within our own hearts.
We wrestle with ourselves in our hearts and minds. Our thoughts are powerful and what we think can become a reality for us. Our emotions can distort the truth and magnify problems. Our hearts and minds can be disturbed and confused, but the love of God is constant and firm. The truth of His mercy and grace give us stability when we feel upset or conflicted.
Lord, grant me Your grace and strength as I struggle against sinful desires and dark thoughts in my heart. Lord, help me to think good thoughts and to keep my eyes on You.
