And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
– 2 Kings 6:17
All of us fight spiritual battles, but the mundane nature of withstanding minor temptations or doing the right thing when others lightly mock us, which is the usual way many of us experience spiritual battles, doesn’t seem like much of a fight. Too often, our battles are lost so fast many of us may not even realize they happened because it seemed so small at the time. Afterwards, we might regret what we’ve done, said, or become.
We forget that each of those daily skirmishes add up to a lifetime of choices which bring us closer to God or distance us from Him. Sometimes, maybe after a series of not so great choices, things get really tough and we realize how much we need God. In those times, we reach out in prayer to God expressing our struggle. Like the young man Elisha prayed for, if we could see the powerful angels fighting for us, we’d have more courage and confidence. We’d know that His angels are around us, protecting us and that our needs are met in His way, the way that will be best for us.
Lord, sometimes I lose sight what this life is for and I get caught up in passing things. Help me to see the spiritual battles I am fighting and to be courageous, knowing that your angels are fighting alongside me and protecting me in my struggles both large and small.
