The fourth interview in our new “Kindred Spirits” series shines a spotlight on the Young at Heart Group from St. Nektarios in Charlotte, NC. We spoke with parishioner Mary Diamaduros.
FLM: How long has your group been active?
Mary: Our Young at Heart was started on June 13, 2002, so we are 13 years old & going strong.
FLM: How often does your group meet, and what are your current membership numbers?
Mary: We meet on the second Thurs. of every month except for Lent (April) July & Aug. We currently have 170 members. Our beginning age group starts at 55. Average attendance 80 to 120 people.
FLM: Can you give us some highlights of your group’s yearly activities?
Mary: Every month a group of the members prepare dinner. This is on a rotating basis. We also have a program at the dinner with speakers such as lawyers, doctors, pharmacists, Scottish Dancers, Mother & Father of the Year, and our annual Christmas Dinner.
FLM: Within the life the church, where do you feel our senior citizens can contribute the most?
Mary: Senior citizens can contribute by being involved in the activities that the Church offers, such as Welcome Committee, Philoptochos, Church Mailings, etc.
