Whenever I make bread, I must remove my wedding rings. When doing so one day, I noticed that on either side of the finger where I wear them, small rough calluses had formed. I’m sure it’s very much the same for other people who rarely change their jewelry, but it got me thinking–the very physical element incorporated into the marriage commitment that I had made had changed a part of my physical body.
Isn’t that very much like the Eucharist? How difficult it is for me to believe that it can really and truly transform me, when there is evidence of transformation going on all around me, even in the smallest things–like the edges of a wedding ring.
