Joyful Noise: Bigger than Me, Bigger than Us

I’ve noticed that I tend to see my children’s behavior towards me as examples of how I behave towards God. I’m pretending that God is like a parent, that God is like me. But God is more than a parent, and God is nothing like me.

This is a huge relief. If God were like me, we should all be terrified.

It’s useful to think of our relationship to God using various comparisons and metaphors, but let us not forget that God is beyond ourselves, utterly unlike ourselves, and beyond anything we could imagine. And while full of uncertainty, this is not a scary prospect–we can and should rest in that knowledge with joy and peace.
