Hymn From The Vespers of The Nativity: “What shall we offer Thee, O Christ, who for our sakes hast appeared on earth as a man? Every creature made by Thee offers Thee thanks…”
We are concerned about gift buying for our family and friends as the holiday approaches. Did we buy the right gift? Will they like it? As we prepare to commemorate the purpose for the Christmas celebration – The Birth of Christ – pause and reflect on its significance in our lives and the lives of those we love.
A child is born. It’s a boy! Great joy! Angels singing, shepherds hurrying from the fields to see this child! Three Kings see a star – a star which signifies the birth of a king – and they follow it and seek this mysterious miracle. Mary already knew that she would call him “Jesus”- and that He would be called “Emmanuel – God with us”.
It was not a birth in a nice home, or a clean hospital. It was a birth in a cave – in the cold – with the animals – in a manger. ”Not a palace, for such a glorious birth? Who is this child? God’s Son, you claim? But in poverty? For us to become rich? But, in which manner?” God sent His Son out of love. “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons…and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” (Gal 4:4-7)
We do not need riches, money and grandeur to show love. WE NEED THE GIVING OF OURSELVES. This season, pray to the Lord to reveal to you the manner in which to “give yourself” as a gift.
It is Christ’s Birth. Pray and ask Him what gift would He most want of you? Pause, and pray to Him, to help you in fulfilling what He desires of you. On Christmas wrap it with your soul and offer it to Him as you celebrate His Birth.
